In September 1999, just three months before the Y2K, the dot-com phenomenon was buzzing, and job hopping every three months was quite common among professionals in San Francisco. The six-month life cycle of startups was almost ordinary, with companies going public, making millions, and then exiting. It was common to see millionaires in their mid-20s parking their convertible Mercedes with the top down and unlocked in the City by the Bay.
